You can sing…but can you swing?!

You can sing...but can you swing?! choral jazz warm-upsYou can sing…but can you swing?! is our most popular choral workshop, designed to help choirs of all types, sizes, ages and ability to “step-click” their way to greater confidence and authenticity when performing in non-classical styles of music. Whilst many conductors are familiar with how to lead their choirs in traditional choral repertoire, we have found that they are often less able to get the best out of their singers when it comes to leading pop and jazz arrangements.

“Joanna & Alexander’s experience and enthusiasm quickly transformed the singers from choir stalls to the stage”
Stephen Layton, Trinity College Choir, Cambridge

As Musical Director of The Swingles, I was lucky enough to have Ward Swingle, the group’s founder, as my mentor for seven years, during which time I coached choirs and a cappella groups throughout the world. Before becoming a full-time composer/arranger, Alexander made his living as a jazz pianist and double bass player; he is also a trainer for the ABRSM’s Jazz Syllabus. We are both music graduates of Oxford University and have been performing as the jazz duo ‘L’Estranges in the Night’ for over 20 years.

Part of the workshop includes learning a set of choral jazz warm-ups (Faber) which we wrote for the first presentation of You can sing…but can you swing?! back in 2005 at the ABCD summer convention.
